Examining the social status of women in the collection of short stories "Extinguished Fire" by Simin Daneshvar from the perspective of the experiential role of language in Holliday's role-oriented approach

Abstract

Functionalist linguistics emphasizes that language is a "social tool" and deals with those human actions that refer to the transmission of meaning with the help of language. Halliday considers language as a system of lexical choices that the speaker uses at three levels according to the context of the situation. Language is formed according to social necessities and the surrounding environment and organizes meaning. The meta-roles of language include: intellectual meta-role, interpersonal meta-role, and textual meta-role. Short story literature, with its emphasis on its "realistic and realistic character", has always sought to define a place for women's presence as well as its liberation from gender limitations and patriarchal readings. The present study tries to answer these questions in a descriptive-analytical way that according to the statistical population of the research, what is the function of each of the linguistic processes in the textual structure of the short story collection "Silent Fire"? And according to the foundations of the intellectual meta-role and the realist perspective governing Simin Daneshvar's short stories, what image has this author painted of "woman" and her "social status"? The findings of the research indicate that Daneshvar has used different types of linguistic processes such as "relational processes", "behavioral processes", "material processes" and "mental processes" in the textual structure of his short stories in this collection to depict the social status of women.
