The Role of Mass Media in “Dialog among Civilizations”

Abstract

The concept “Dialog among Civilizations” fulfils societies, cultures, and civilizations various good functions. This article picks up the most important of the functions as follows:
a. recognition of civilization variety.
b. highlighting the points civilizations have in common
c. creating closer orientation among civilizations
d. increasing their mutual reliance
e. enriching them
f. giving them better criticism tolerance
g. rationalizing the decisions made by government
h. establishing stable peace
i. granting intellectuals an active role in cultural matters
To be successful and efficient, “Dialog among Civilizations” has to make preparations on intellectual, rational, communicative, and operational grounds. In this regard, mass media may serve the following purposes:
a. Communication of ideas to and from civilizations
b. establishing appropriate atmosphere for the dialogs
c. strengthening the dialogs
d. socialization and acculturation of the dialogs
e. visual demonstration of the trend of dialogs
f. enhancement of “Civil Society”
g. putting corresponding propaganda on
h. offering a chance for media criticisms
i. consolidating the social unity
